Health

At ENAI - Africa, we believe that Community Units (CUs) sit at the center of Universal Health Coverage (UHC)

This is because UHC is more than ensuring that all citizens can access quality affordable health care at health facilities, it is also reducing the number of people who need to visit hospitals through preventive measures at the household level.

We are relentlessly working to raise a bar on health accessibility among the pastoral community.

Kenya’s current community health services were first introduced in 2006. The services are outlined in the country’s Community Health Strategy, which explains the national plan to expand access to community health care for the whole population through two close-to-community providers: Community Health Workers (community-selected community members who carry out a range of activities at the household level) and Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) (government-selected workers who supervise CHVs among other community health tasks).

ENAI-Africa believes that Universal Health Coverage (UHC) cannot be achieved without the efforts of Community Units (CUs). This is because UHC is more than ensuring that all citizens can access quality affordable health care at health facilities, it is also reducing the number of people who need to visit hospitals through preventive measures at the household level. Most communicable diseases, including Malaria, TB, and HIV can be prevented through the work of CHVs and CHAs who provide health education and follow up actions in households. ENAI – Africa is leveraging on the power of technology to support provision of community health services.

To ensure the provision of quality Community Health Services (CHS), ENAI-Africa is supporting the development and adoption of legislative policies and strategies. This is creating a solid framework that guarantees the delivery of comprehensive and effective healthcare at the community level. Concurrently,  our efforts have realized strengthening and scaling up of the Community Health Information Systems (CHIS). This has enhanced the delivery of CHS. By bolstering the governance structures that support the functioning of Community Health Units (CHUs), the coordination and management of CHS has significantly improved. Additionally, advocating for improved resourcing in the county is essential to secure the necessary funding, human resources, and infrastructure required for the optimal functioning of CHS.  These measures have contributed to the establishment of sustainable and resilient community health systems that meets the diverse healthcare needs of the population.
